- Actor Ian Somerhalder says The Vampire Diaries will end after its eighth season
- The show is currently on its seventh season
- Earlier, another cast member, Kat Graham, said she will leave the show after the eighth season
American supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries will be ending after the eight season according to one of the show’s lead actors, Ian Somerhalder, who plays villain-turned-protagonist Damon Salvator.
“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice,” Somerhalder told Us Magazine.
The show is currently airing its seventh season since it premiered in September 2009 on The CW television network.
Earlier, another cast member, Kat Graham, who plays the character of Bonnie Bennett in the series since the first season, said that she will be leaving the show in the upcoming season but did not mention that the show would be ending as well.
“Season 8 will be my last season. I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. If the crew can come with me, then we’ll be good. The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family. But you know what, another season is a whole other year, and we’re going to blow it out,” she said.
Last March, the program had already been given the green light for renewal by The CW. However, the network did not make any official announcement about the program after the eighth season.
Even with no pronouncements from the network, however, the show’s regular cast has spoken up about the end of the program while pointing out the changes in the story line.
“My role is shifting in the show and we have a lot to do,” Somerhalder explained.
During the sixth season, Nina Dobrev, who portrayed Elena Gilbert, left the series; despite having played a major role in the show’s plot.
The Vampire Diaries and its cast members have already won various awards, including the People’s Choice Awards and the Teens’ Choice Awards.
