- Davao City mayor comes back swinging at women’s groups who filed a complaint against him at the CHR
- He says he will not respond to the complaint
- CHR to require Duterte to issue a reply to the complaint
MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte only had choice words to the women’s groups who charged him before the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in connection with his controversial rape remark.
“Go to hell,” GMA News quoted him as saying, after he was asked his comment on the complaint.
Duterte added he will ignore the complaint.
“I will not respond to CHR complaints,” he said.
The Women Against Duterte Movement, composed of different women’s advocacy groups headed by WomanHealth Philippines’ Ana Maria Nemenzo, World March of Women’s Jean Enriquez, Katutubong Lilak’s Judy Pasimio and Sentro’s Josua Mata filed the complaint against Duterte as per his statements which demeaned and threatened women.
“To make the rape of a woman who was later killed a laughing matter, and to treat women as playthings to be taken advantaged of constitute an affront to us and all women,” the coalition said. “As a public official, an incumbent mayor of Davao City, and now seeking to win the highest position of the land, Mr. Duterte is expected to be an exemplar of a respectable, law-abiding citizen. Instead, he arrogantly flaunts his power over these women and diminishes their worth as human beings.”
For his part, CHR chair Chito Gascon said they will request Duterte to air his side on the matter.
“As Gender Ombud, the Commission on Human Rights takes cognizance and expresses grave concern over the recent statements made by presidential bet Mayor Rodrigo Duterte during his campaign on the rape of an Australian lay minister decades ago and on his reaction to his daughter’s revelation of being a ‘rape victim’ herself,” he pointed out.
