MANILA, Philippines – Weighing in on Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial rape remarks which have since subjected him to intense criticism, Sen. Bongbong Marcos said while he agrees that it was not proper, critics of the mayor should also understand that it’s really just his manner of speaking.
“We know that ‘yun ang style ng kanyang pagsasalita [that’s his style of speaking]. Kahit papaano [However it was], the sentiment behind it at the very least was inappropriate,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
While confident that Duterte will be able to explain himself, Marcos nevertheless stressed the need to be sensitive especially in issuing remarks connected with victims of violent crimes.
“I’m sure he has an explanation,” he said. “You know one of the qualities I suppose he has is he doesn’t worry about political correctness but sometimes it is necessary to be sensitive to the plight of some of the victims of violence.”
“I’m sure he understands that and he will make it up to those affected,” he added.
At the same time, Marcos said the final word is up to the voters when asked if Duterte’s remarks will be rated against him.
“That’s what the election is all about, (it’s) considering the record of all the candidates,” he said. “It is not only those running for the presidency, the vice presidency, the senators, (but) every single candidate. Dapat tingnan kung karapat-dapat na sila ay umupo dun sa matataas na posisyon [They should be scrutinized whether they are qualified to sit in high positions].”
