- Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo said she needs to work harder to sustain her lead in the VP race
- She also admits the odds are still against her because she came from behind to overtake both Marcos and Escudero
- She also acknowledged her lead is not comfortable, but she is merely ‘within a striking distance’
MANILA, Philippines – Despite topping the recent Social Weather Station – Business World survey conducted last April 18 to 20, vice presidential candidate and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo acknowledges she still needs to work harder if she wants to sustain her lead with barely a week before the national election.
In the latest SWS-BW pre-election poll, Robredo emerged as the VP top choice for the first time with 26 percent, narrowly beating Senator Bongbong Marcos who got 25 percent. However, the two are considered ‘statistically tied’ on top with Robredo leading Marcos by a single point.
Speaking to ABS-CBN News, Robredo said the lead can be hardly called ‘comfortable’ although it reflects the hardwork the ‘Daang Matuwid’ team poured into their effort over the past months to achieve their goal of reaching number 2 by April.
“Iyung target namin April number two na ako, na-hit naman. In fact there were two surveys already — parang there are many surveys coming out — most of the surveys number two ako, iba-iba yung gaps,” Robredo said in an interview.
[We somehow hit our target to reach number two by April. In fact there were two surveys already (in which I topped) – it seems there were many surveys coming out – in most of the surveys, I was at number two; the gaps were varying.]
The Bicolana lawmaker cited the SWS mobile survey last week wherein she got a preference ratings of 30 percent as against the 27 percent of Marcos, the erstwhile frontrunner in previous SWS surveys and her closest rival.
Senator Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero, the previous heavy favorite among VP bets in early mock polls, dropped to third place behind Robredo with 18 percent, a far cry from his November and December 2015’s 30 percent rating.
Robredo has eventually overtaken both Escudero and Marcos to gain the lead after being in third place in March 30 – April 2 survey where she got only 19 percent.
However, Robredo acknowledged her recent lead is not ‘comfortable’ but she is merely within a striking distance of edging out Marcos from the heated vice presidential race.
“Siyempre yung odds pa rin are against me in the sense na come from behind talaga ako,” she said. “Halos walang nakakakilala. So ngayon it’s a combination of many things.” [Of course, the odds are against me in the sense that it was a ‘come from behind’ for me. Before, I was relatively unknown. But now it’s a combination of many things.]
Robredo said she needs to double her efforts in Metro Manila and Balance of Luzon and among Classes ABC and D where she trails behind Marcos. She, however continues to dominate Visayas while Senator Alan Peter Cayetano topped the Mindanao respondents.
Cayetano remains in fourth place in the same survey with 16 percent, followed by Senator Antonio Trillanes (5 %) and Senator Gregorio Honasan (2%).
