- Iglesia Ni Cristo denies endorsing Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos for the upcoming elections
- The statement was done by INC officials after Marcos confirmed earlier that the religious sect has officially endorsed him
- INC leaders said they are still deliberating on who to support in the May 9 elections
- Allegedly, a candidate favored by the influential sect “is half-assured of 80%” of the votes cast by INC voters in elections
Despite the earlier confirmation of Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos that Iglesia Ni Cristo has officially endorsed him for the upcoming elections, the religious sect denied endorsing a candidate as yet.
An article written by Patricia Lourdes Viray on Philippine Star stated that leaders of the INC are still deliberating on who to support in the May 9 elections.
Marcos, who is running for the second highest position, earlier claimed that the INC had informed him of the endorsement last April 26; further disclosing that his long relationship with the sect which started way back during his father’s tenure was the reason behind the support.
Meanwhile, other presidential aspirants have also expressed hope in getting the group’s bloc vote support by meeting with INC leaders.
During the 2010 elections, the sect endorsed the Liberal Party tandem of President Benigno Aquino III and former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.
How Potent is the INC’s Vote Delivery System?
An article published by Rappler in 2014 disclosed that a candidate favored by the influential religious sect “is half-assured of 80%” of the votes cast by INC voters in elections.
The Iglesia is best known as a solid bloc; considering that its members regard as a religious duty going to the polling precincts on Election Day to carry out the “command of their leaders.”
Based on experience, most of those in the INC list are in the winning circle as seen on pre-election surveys, with the names of the anointed ones released just a few days before the poll exercise.
