- Vice President Binay paid a courtesy call on INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo
- Binay said he came to seek the INC’s endorsement for the upcoming elections
- Earlier, presidential hopefuls Mar Roxas and Senator Garce Poe also made similar visits to the INC central office
Vice President Jejomar Binay paid a courtesy call to the Iglesia ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo and formally asked the church’s endorsement for the coming May 9 elections.
Joey Salgado, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) campaign coordinator, confirmed the meeting between UNA’s standard bearer VP Binay and Ka Eduardo Manalo.
Salgado said the vice president was humbled by the opportunity given by Manalo to discuss his anti-poverty program and plan to build a “competent, caring and compassionate government.”
“It was an opportunity for the VP to share his vision for the country with Ka Eduardo,” he said.
Eagle News PH said that after the meeting, Binay said the INC’s support is important to him.
“Humingi po ako ng tulong. Dumudulog po ako rito na sana ay masuportahan ako ng kapatiran. (I came here to seek the support of the brotherhood),” Binay, who is eyeing the presidency in the upcoming elections, said.
It was disclosed in Mara Cepeda’s article for Rappler that was published on April 21, 2016 that around 2.6 percent of the total population of Filipino voters (54.6 million voters signed up for 2016 polls, according to Comelec) belongs to INC, whose members are known to vote for candidates chosen by church leaders during elections.
Two days earlier, Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas, accompanied by his wife former ABS-CBN broadcaster Korina Sanchez, also made a similar visit to the INC Central Office.
Senator Grace Poe, another presidential aspirant, also admitted meeting with officials of INC earlier this month, but said she did not directly ask the church’s support for the May 9 elections
