- GMA network is the only Filipino TV station to win in the 2016 New York Festivals
- The network won four bronze medals in four different catagories
- Rival networks ABS-CBN and TV5 received finalist certificates
GMA News and Public Affairs emerged as the only Filipino television station to win awards at the 2016 New York Film Festivals.
The network brought home four medals and five finalist certificates during the awards ceremony held in the United States.
Four of its documentary programs won bronze medals in four different categories.
The documentary Dorm 12 about the aging prisoners at the Correctional Institute for Women won the bronze in the category for “Community Portraits.” This was produced by I-Witness, the station’s longest-running documentary program and written by reporter Kara David.
Another bronze in the “Social Issues” category was won by Hikahos sa Lungsod [Poverty in the City], produced by Maki Pulido of the news magazine program Reporter’s Notebook which brought to light the current state of urban migration in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, documentary program Front Row won in the “Community Service Programs” category for its piece titled Maestra Salbabida [Teacher Lifebuoy] that told the story of a schoolteacher in Mindoro who uses makeshift flotation devices to reach the far-flung villages where she educates the children living in those communities.
In addition, the program Reel Time, also won in the “Human Concerns” category for the story Isang Paa sa Hukay [One Foot in the Hole] about the effects of small-scale mining operations in the province of Camarines Norte.
The network was represented by GMA News and Public Affairs First Vice President Nessa Valdellon, Senior Program Manager Angeli Atienza, and reporter Kara David.
Meanwhile, other networks and Philippine TV stations participated in the festival but only received finalist certificates.
ABS-CBN station was a finalist in the “Family Programs” category for Nathaniel which starred Gerald Anderson, Shaina Magdayao, and child actor Marco Masa; as well as in the “Biography/Profiles” category for Rated K: Ayokong Tumanda (Never Grow Old) by the magazine program Rated K, Handa Na Ba Kayo? and in the ‘Human Concerns” category for Mukha (Faces).
TV5, meanwhile, was a finalist in the “Environment and Ecology” category for Wealth of The Nation.
Chinese network CCTV News was a finalist for its story about The Philippines’ Gun Problem in the “Current Affairs” category.
“Once again, Finalists engaged audiences world-wide with their innovative storytelling. The wide variety of high quality programming and the breadth of platforms our submissions encompass demonstrate how incredibly robust today’s landscape really is – in drama, journalism, sports, comedy, documentary, image and events,” New York Festivals executive director Rose Anderson told Adobo Magazine.
