- Senator Trillanes claimed that presidential candidate, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has at least P211 million of unexplained wealth
- Allegations are desperate ploy to bring down Mayor Duterte said running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano
- Cayetano claimed baseless accusations against Duterte is to promote Trillanes’ preferred presidential bet, Senator Grace Poe
“Mayor Duterte who brags that he is not corrupt and is a simple and poor man should be asked to explain about his secret bank accounts that contained at least P200 million,” said Senator Antonio Trillanes, claiming Presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte failed to disclose wealth amounting to P211 million in his 2014 Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SALN), mentioned in an article by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Trillanes, who is supporting the presidential bid of Senator Grace Poe — Duterte’s closest rival in the polls, said Duterte’s bank account has been validated by his camp and that it was under a joint account in the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Julia Vargas branch, the Sun Star wrote.
Trillanes said earlier this week “I am now so motivated to make sure that he doesn’t become the president of our country. We cannot have a psycho as our commander-in-chief. Within the next few days, he would be exposed as a fraud.”
Trillanes stands by his track record and stressed this exposé is not politically-driven to boost his vice presidential race ranking.
Running mate of PDP-LABAN standard bearer Rodrigo Duterte, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano claimed that the allegations are a mere smear attempt.
“The allegation is clearly a desperate ploy to bring down Mayor Duterte and promote Sen. Trillanes’ preferred presidential bet, Senator Grace Poe,” Cayetano said in an emailed statement.
Cited in Update.ph, Senator Cayetano claimed that Trillanes’ camp came up with baseless accusations against Duterte and they clearly have nothing on the Davao City mayor.
Cayetano also said Duterte is the only presidential candidate to sign a bank waiver, wrote GMA News Online.
“I ask the people who yearn for real change not to be distracted and fooled by their desperate antics. We must remain focused. The enemies of change are clearly panicking. They are scared. They are throwing everything including the kitchen sink at Mayor Duterte. They have all the reasons to be scared. Change is coming,” he added.
Lia Mañalac of GMA News quoted Trillanes in Balitanghaili telling Cayetano not to meddle with the issue lest he will be the subject of his next exposé.
PDP standard bearer Rodrigo Duterte tops latest presidential polls with a 12-point lead over independent presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe.
