This was revealed by Health Secretary Janette Garin as she disclosed that the DOH is keen on tracing how it started. “Has norovirus been here even before, or someone brought it here? Contact tracing is being conducted to identify the index case,” she was quoted saying in an article written by Sheila Crisostomo on Philippine Star. In line with this, Garin said the outbreak was detected when an increase in diarrhea cases was recorded at the Zamboanga City Medical Center. She reported that at least four persons reportedly died and more than 700 others which include children, were hospitalized in Zamboanga City due to norovirus.
