- The NBI arrested a second suspect in the Comelec website hacking
- The NBI’s Cybercrime Division said they are still looking for a third suspect
- Atty. Roland Aguto, head of NBI CCD, said they expect to arrest the third suspect before the May 9 elections
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) nabbed the second suspect in the hacking of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) website.
The NBI’s Cybercrime Division (NBI CCD) arrested Jonel de Asis, a 23-year-old Information Technology expert, in his home in Muntinlupa City on Thursday afternoon, April 28.
Last week, the first suspect, Paul Loui Biteng was arrested in Sampaloc, Manila. He was charged with illegal access to computer system, data interference, and misuse of devices, under Republic Act 10175 otherwise known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
GMA News Online mentioned in its April 30, 2016 article that De Asis confirmed to John Consulta of GMA News TV Live in an interview his involvement in the hacking of the Comelec’s website.
Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said De Asis confessed during a closed-door meeting at the NBI to being the mastermind of the hacking and stealing 340-gigabyte worth of data from the website.
Bautista said De Asis claimed he and his cohorts merely wanted to prove that it is easy to hack the Comelec website. The hacker said they have no intention of selling the hacked data to a third party.
NBI Cybercrime Division head Atty. Roland Aguto said they are still looking for a third suspect in the hacking, who is believed to be still in Metro Manila. He said they expect to arrest the suspect before the May 9 elections.
Once all the suspects are arrested, Aguto said the NBI’s next move is “to go after those people who downloaded that information and charge them.”
