- Mar Roxas said they were able to verify Duterte’s dollar account with the BPI
- Roxas disclosed they, too, deposited $ 10 into an account number and was accepted
- Mayor Duterte has yet to make a statement on the latest allegation from his rival
MANILA, Philippines – After an investigative journalist verified Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s peso account with the Bank of Philippine Island (BPI) Julia Vargas, Pasig City branch by depositing P500 into it, the camp of Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Mar Roxas used the same method to confirm a separate dollar account under the former’s name.
At the press briefing on Friday, April 29, Roxas said they, too, wanted to confirm if Senator Antonio Trillanes’ allegations that Duterte failed to declare his millions in the 2014 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) has basis.
“We wanted to verify if Sen. Trillanes’ allegations were true. So we deposited $ 10 to one of the accounts at nakita ito ay nasa pangalan ni Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Sara Z. Duterte sa BPI din ito [and we found out it was under the name of Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Sara Z. Duterte, also with BPI,” Inquirer has quoted Roxas telling reporters.
Roxas also showed a copy of the bank transaction receipt dated April 29, 2016. It showed that the bank account number is 002434-200159-2071 and is under the name of Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Sara Z. Duterte.
The administration bet renewed his challenge to his rival to speak the truth about Trillanes’ allegations. At the same time, he called the mayor a ’liar’ and urged him to sign the waiver that would allow investigation into his alleged hidden wealth.
“Mayor Duterte, time’s up. Tell the truth,” Roxas said; addressing Duterte.
The former Interior secretary also took the opportunity to compare Duterte to Vice President Jejomar Binay who is facing plunder charges but refused to face investigation at the Senate.
“Parehas na ba kayo ni Vice President Binay, umiiwas sa katotohanan, umiiwas sa pagtingin dito sa mga bank accounts na ito?” Roxas added. [Are you now the same as Vice President Binay, evading the truth, avoiding investigation into these accounts?]
On Thursday, investigative journalist Ellen Tordesillas sent a friend to the same bank to deposit P500 into an account number – 002433-0695-39 – which was earlier published by the Inquirer.
True enough, the deposit was accepted and the transaction was validated and came back with a receipt. The account was named under “Rodrigo Roa Duterte” or “Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Sara Z Duterte”.
While Duterte admitted maintaining at least two bank accounts, he has yet to make a statement about the alleged dollar account.
