- CPP founder mulls return to PH to attend Duterte’s inauguration if he becomes president
- He will also lobby for a ceasefire and resumption of peace talks with a Duterte gov’t
- He praised former student, said he is a unifying figure with a proven track record
MANILA, Philippines – With Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte potentially on the brink of becoming the country’s next president, Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison said he is mulling on a possible return to the Philippines to witness his former student’s inauguration should he win and to push for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.
“I will come home as soon as there is a sure basis for the ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks. I might even come home for a visit as early as June to witness the oath-taking of Duterte, if he wins or if he is not cheated,” he told ABS-CBN.
Sison added that it was Duterte himself who offered first to meet him abroad before he comes home.
“The mayor said that if he wins, we would meet as soon as possible abroad and then in the Philippines,” he pointed out, adding that he has always had a good relationship with Duterte since their days as teacher and student due to their similar way of thinking.
“We have good vibes because he was my student in Political Thought at the Lyceum of the Philippines,” he said.
The mayor’s former mentor also praised him as the presidential candidate most qualified to run the country because of his unifying presence and proven track record.
“He is the most open to a coalition government of national unity, peace and development,” he said. “I can see the track record and good qualities of Duterte. He has been very cooperative with the revolutionary movement in ways beneficial to the people.”
