- Albay Gov. Joey Salceda officially endorses Sen. Grace Poe and Chiz Escudero
- Salceda will no longer support Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo of the Liberal Party
- Salceda was the provincial chairman of the LP before deciding to run as an Independent
Albay Governor Joey Salceda officially endorsed Senators Grace Poe and Francis Escudero, who are running as Independents for President and Vice President, respectively.
In doing so, Salceda, who served as the provincial chairman of the Liberal Party (LP), has dropped his support for LP standard bearers former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas and Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo.
Salceda says he is now officially running as an Independent allied with Poe’s Partido Galing at Puso.
“I am Gov Salceda and my President is Grace Poe. She shares our values of authentic humanism, shares our goals of countryside development and national competitiveness and certainly her compassion will ensure that the impacts will be shared by all,” Governor Salceda wrote in his official Facebook account.
Explaining his support for Poe, the governor said that more than expertise, the country needs a “heart in the right place” to effectively govern the citizenry.
“And what we have learned throughout the years of working on the ground is that expertise is needed but does not suffice. What one needs more to succeed is the heart – and the heart in the right place – to be able to truly help our fellow citizens,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a separate interview with the Inquirer, Salceda also confirmed that he will be supporting Escudero as his VP bet.
The Albay governor’s support could be a potential boost for Escudero, who is running against candidates who all have roots or some affinity to the Bicol region.
Salceda, who is currently on his third and final term as governor of Albay, is now seeking a seat in Congress; representing the second district of the province. (mjf)
