- Pregnant, dead-looking opossum was rescued on the road
- The animal, named Angel, was saved by Judy Obregon
- Angel will be released on a 60-acre property where hunting is prohibited when she becomes fit
A pregnant opossum, which appeared to be dead, was rescued on the road by a woman who loves saving animals.
In an article written by Julijia Televiciute of Bored Panda, it was disclosed that Judy Obregon was driving to see her mother-in-law when she saw an opossum on the road. At first glance, she thought that the animal was dead.
Suddenly, the tiny creature lifted her head. Obregon approached the animal and saw that it was not only injured, probably shot with a gun, but also pregnant.
“I knew I could not walk away,” Obregon said.
She put the opossum in a box and took her to her mother-in-law’s house where she waited for Tabatha, a wildlife rehabilitator.
“She has not tried to bite me once,” Tabatha said. “She knows I am here to help, not to hurt her. I think she has a very good chance.”
The animal looked scared but still clung to Tabatha’s husband.
Obregon said rescuing the opossum, later named Angel, was not one of her typical rescues because she rescues dogs and cats.
“This is out of the ordinary for me, but I wouldn’t have avoided her for that reason. She is still an animal with a beating heart, and it was still beating when I got to her,” Obregon, the founder of animal rescue in Fort Worth, Texas, said.
A photo of Angel, looking very healthy and at peace, was posted on Facebook; where a lot of users commented.
“She looks truly amazing! Great job! I am so grateful you and your hero are in this world!” said A. Best.
“Thank you for saving the opossum I get sad every time I see these differant animals hurt,” J. Northrup expressed.
“Aww, so happy all is better for you and the babies. Thank you all that cared! God bless you,” wrote D. James.
While C. Vogel said: “These creatures are so amazing, just look at her little face, she is smiling! It is 2016, can we all do our part to help educate people that Opossums are not the mean filthy things so many people think they are. They are a vital link in the environment, they help your gardens by eating all the pests, they can not get or carry rabies, and they are north america’s only marsupial, a class of animals that are truly unique and worth protecting!
When Angel is fit and healthy again she will be released to a 60-acre property where hunting is prohibited.
