- After denying the presence of a BPI account on April 27, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on April 28 reversed his statement and admits presence of two accounts
- Earlier, the tough-talking presidential aspirant was challenged by Vice Presidential candidate Antonio Trillanes IV to execute an affidavit that would allow the opening of bank accounts
- Contrary to what Trillanes has claimed that the mayor has at least P211 million in an account, Duterte claims he only has about P50,000 and P17,500
After denying the existence of a Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI) account, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on April 28 confirmed that he has existing accounts on Julia Vargas Avenue branch in Pasig City.
An article written by Nestor Corrales on Philippine Daily Inquirer stated that Duterte said he has two accounts with the bank which only have about P50,000 and P17,500.
This contradicts the earlier claim of Vice Presidential bet Antonio Trillanes IV, who revealed that the Davao mayor has P211 million in an account which he failed to declare in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
The tough-talking presidential aspirant was even challenged by Trillanes to execute an affidavit that will allow the opening of his accounts for public scrutiny.
However, Duterte denied the accusation and said: “The account is not true and is just a fabrication of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, who is a money for hire.”
Upon denying it, the presidential candidate also affirmed he would not issue a waiver for the specific account.
“I will not play into their hands by issuing a waiver. The account is nonexistent,” the Davao City mayor earlier noted as he called Trillanes an “idiot” and a “liar” after the senator claimed that Duterte had told him how he killed people kneeling before him.
In a related development, Peter Laviña, Duterte’s spokesperson, stressed that Duterte’s legal experts are looking into possible cases that can be filed against Trillanes.
