- Vice President Jejomar Binay continues his attack against Mayor Rodrigo Duterte
- Binay vowed to investigate Duterte’s so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS) and the latter’s alleged record of human rights violations
- But Duterte warned Binay it is he who is facing plunder case and may likely face imprisonment
MANILA, Philippines – The word war between Vice President Jejomar Binay and Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte rages on as the two presidential aspirants exchanged threats of putting one in jail if the other is elected.
This time, VP Binay vowed to investigate Duterte’s alleged record of summary executions in Davao City and bring the mayor’s so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS) to justice.
The United Nationalist Alliance bet said he would form an independent commission to dig deeper in the alleged human rights violations committed by Duterte during his term as mayor and make the latter pay for it.
“It’s time for DDS, along with Duterte, to answer to God and the laws of our country,” Inquirer quoted Binay as saying in a statement.
Earlier, Binay called Duterte a ‘berdugo’ or executioner who supposedly killed people without due process of law. This prompted the tough-talking mayor to retort back; saying it is Binay who is a ‘berdugo’ of public funds.
The attack against Duterte has hyped up lately after he emerged as the recent topnotcher in both surveys conducted by Social Weather Station (SWS) and Pulse Asia.
Binay earlier questioned Duterte’s promise to end crime and drug problems in the country within three to six months of his administration if elected president in May.
In his recent attack, Binay asked voters not to elect Duterte on the account of his record of human rights violations and abuses. He accused Duterte of killing journalists as well as innocent and poor people.
“If I become President, I will send to jail child killers and those who kill the poor. I will jail those killing journalists,” Binay said.
“But because we respect the law, we will give Mr. Duterte and DDS the chance to defend themselves. We will give them the chance to explain to the law — something they denied to their victims,” added the Vice President who slipped to third place in surveys behind Duterte and Senator Grace Po after consistently topping mock polls for five years since 2010.
But Duterte quickly dismissed Binay’s pronouncements; adding in jest he would be happy to share a prison cell with the vice president.
He also reminded Binay that it is the latter, not him, who is facing plunder and is likely to face imprisonment in the near future.
