- A woman from Pangasinan was jailed for allegedly killing her own baby
- The autopsy revealed the reason of death was extreme shaking which caused blood clot in the baby’s internal organ
- The suspect was reported to have had depression since 2012 after her husband and eldest child abandoned her
BASISTA, Pangasinan – A woman was arrested in Pangasinan after allegedly shaking her 1-month-old baby to death. According to GMA Online News, the baby’s grandfather discovered the dead body of the baby with a rosary coiled on its neck. The mother was carrying the lifeless body of the infant.
In the initial report, the authorities suspected that the baby died of strangulation. But the autopsy revealed that the baby died of hemoperitoneum secondary to traumatic injuries to the abdomen which could be a result of violent shaking that may cause internal bleeding.
Relatives of the woman revealed that the suspect, who will be charged with parricide, has been suffering from depression since 2012 after her separation with her husband.
What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
According to Wikipedia, “Shaken baby syndrome or SBS is a constellation of medical findings (often referred to as a “triad”): subdural hematoma, retinal bleeding, and brain swelling which some physicians have used to infer child abuse caused by violent shaking. In a majority of cases there is no visible sign of external injury. Shaken baby syndrome is a subset of the broader form of child abuse termed abusive head trauma. It is also identified as “an injury to the skull or intracranial contents of an infant or young child (aged 5 years below) due to inflicted blunt impact and/or violent shaking”. SBS is often fatal and can cause severe brain damage, resulting in either death or lifelong disability.
In July 2013, a nanny in Makati City was charged with child abuse after she was caught on CCTV vigorously shaking and hitting the head of a 3-month-old baby she was supposed to give care.
