- Two Filipino teens are presumed dead after being swept out to sea in San Francisco
- They’re identified as Wayne Ausa and Grisham Duran
- Authorities believe it could take weeks before their bodies drift back ashore
SAN FRANCISCO, California – Two Filipino teens identified as Wayne Ausa and Grisham Duran were swept out to sea at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach on Saturday, April 16.
According to an article published by CBS San Francisco, the 17-year-old Ausa, and 16-year-old Duran, both students at Vallejo High School, linked arms with their three other friends as they entered the waves and struggled with the strong current at about four in the afternoon.
A wave knocked them down and forced their arms apart. Ausa and Duran’s three friends made it out of the water while the two were swept out.
The fire department claimed that the ocean surf there can be treacherous and even ankle-deep water can have strong enough currents to pull an adult in.
In fact, there are large signs posted at Ocean Beach entrances, which serve as a warning, stating: “People swimming and wading have drowned here.”
After a four-hour search for the boys by air and by sea, the Coast Guard and the fire department suspended the operation.
They feared that the boys could have been swept several miles by the strong currents and that it could take weeks before their bodies drift back ashore.
This is the 12th rescue operations at Ocean Beach this year.
ABS-CBN News quoted Capt. Gregory Stump of the U.S. Coast Guard as saying: “We’ve had quite a few around here lately and it’s because of these violent waters and it’s unfortunate, but folks come out here and they don’t understand how violent and difficult the conditions are out here.”
Friends and families of the teens struggle to cope with the loss.
