BENGALURU, India – A mother dog is visibly in grief after losing all of her eight puppies when a local woman killed all of them in front of her as a punishment.
Chetan R mentioned in his article for Bangalore Mirror published on March 21 that the incident took place in Jalahalli West area in north-west Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka in India on March 15.
Animal activists who spoke with the woman, identified as Ponamma, said that the puppies were all killed to “teach the mother dog a lesson”.
Ponamma, who is the wife of a former honorary flight lieutenant, mercilessly threw all eight puppies onto the boulders. She was reportedly doing this to teach the dog a lesson who dared to have puppies in a drain under her gate.
Seven of the puppies died the same day while one that survived the brutality succumbed on the next day. The outraged residents of the community filed a complaint with Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) on March 17, and the same day, the NGO registered a complaint against Ponamma with the Peenya police.
An article by Maya Sharma for NDTV published on March 22 quoted Harish KB, a representative of CUPA, said what Ponamma did was one of the most horrible cases he had seen.
“We tried to meet the woman to ask why she did that. She said she wanted to teach a lesson to the mother dog, who was living in a drain outside her house with the puppies,” said Harish, who is also an authorized officer of the Animal Welfare Board of India.
The incident had triggered shock and outrage in the community, with some animal lovers asking pet owners to be careful.
Ponamma was arrested and was charged with a case in relation to cruelty to animals for the incident.
