- President Barack Obama has released stricter sanctions against North Korea
- The economic sanctions serve as a punishment for their missile launches in February
- The order bans economic trade with North Korea and freezes its public properties in the United States
President Barack Obama has issued intensified sanctions against North Korea for its missile launches that are suspected to be nuclear tests.
The President’s order include the freezing of North Korean government properties in America and banning the export of US products to Pyongyang. The order also authorized the US to blacklist entities, even US citizens themselves, who engage in economic transactions with North Korea.
In an NBC story, a White House statement was quoted as saying, “The U.S. and the global community will not tolerate North Korea’s illicit nuclear and ballistic missile activities, and we will continue to impose costs on North Korea until it comes into compliance with its international obligations.”
“These actions are consistent with our longstanding commitment to apply sustained pressure on the North Korean regime,” it also said.
The United Nations has earlier prohibited North Korea from executing nuclear tests but in February, Pyongyang launched a long range rocket.
North Korean authorities defended it; saying that the rocket was attached with a satellite. But South Korea, as noted in the NBC story, accused them that it was testing “ballistic missile.”
“The U.N. convened an emergency Security Council meeting and adopted its own stiff sanctions for the missile launch and for allegedly conducting a hydrogen bomb test in January,” the NBC story also said.
