In line with the second leg of this year’s presidential debates, students from the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Cebu City said that they would like to hear the candidates’ plans for educational, health and environmental concerns.
In an article written by Trisha Macas for GMA News Online on March 19, it was disclosed that representatives from the university’s biology department said that the presidential aspirants are yet to bare their plans on the three topics that are of great importance to Filipinos.
One biology student named Nicole shared to GMA reporters that if given the chance, she will ask about the budget allocation for the country’s premiere state university.
“Why is it not possible to have free tuition in universities, especially in UP? Why is there no budget for the tuition of the students?” she said.
Another student named Gwyn said that her concerns are about the public health program of the government, which she believes have been neglected by political leaders.
“Why are the public hospitals here in the Philippines have inadequate services and incomplete equipment? Public health is supposedly one of the priorities, right? Not all public hospitals but some really have terrible service,” she said.
Meanwhile, another biology major named Ralph said that as a future biologist, his greatest concern is about the environment.
“As a Biology student, my biggest concern is really the environment. What are their concrete plans for the conservation of nature like plants and animals?” He said.
UP Cebu is this year’s venue of the PiliPinas Debates 2016 hosted by TV5, Philippine Star and Business World.
While the host networks are yet to reveal the official topics for the debate, UP Vice President for Public Affairs Prospero de Vera said that Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Grace Poe Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, and former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas will most likely talk about climate change, health, education, graft and corruption.
