MANILA, Philippines – Downplaying criticisms against President Benigno Aquino III for actively engaging in partisan politics by campaigning for Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo, Palace spokesman Herminio Coloma Jr. said the Chief Executive was merely upholding his duty to his ‘Bosses’ by ensuring that the reforms he started during his administration are continued.
“Ang paglahok ng Pangulo sa kampanya ay bahagi ng kanyang nais na maipagpatuloy at maisulong ang mga nasimulang reporma at programang pangkaunlaran na siya ring prinsipyo at adhikaing isinasabuhay ng mga kandidato ng Koalisyon ng Daang Matuwid sa pamumuno nina Secretary Roxas at Representative Robredo,” he told the Philippine Star.
[The President’s involvement in the campaign is part of his desire to continue and advance the reforms and programs he started under the principles which are also practiced by candidates Secretary Roxas and Representative Robredo.]
“He wants to ensure continuity of the good governance which is essential to the attainment of inclusive growth for future generations of Filipinos,” he added.
Aquino has already appeared in one political ad where he endorses Roxas and Robredo.
He has also been known to take potshots at Roxas and Robredo’s rivals including Vice President Jejomar Binay and Sen. Bongbong Marcos.
Despite the president’s open endorsement of Roxas, Coloma stressed Aquino himself wants to ensure a fair, peaceful and credible election just like everyone else and will not interfere with the handlings of the Commission on Elections.
“He is also determined to ensure the conduct of fair and credible elections by respecting the independence of the Commission on Elections,” he said.
