An artist has turned Syrian refugees into Disney princesses; aiming to raise awareness and funds that will allow Malaak NGO to grant the girls a proper education.
“As a Syrian artist, I always feel the need to give back to my country. Unfortunately, Syrian refugees are becoming associated with terrorism. I wanted to create a project that would clear the stereotypes that people have about Syrian refugees and spread awareness about the importance of educating children in refugee camps,” artist Saint Hoax wrote in an article that was published on Bored Panda.
According to Saint Hoax, the project “Once Upon a War” is the outcome of his “life-altering encounter” with Syrian refugee girls.

“Plastik Studios and I decided to throw a costume party in the camp. They got to dress up as their favourite Disney princesses and talk about their aspirations. The girls really enjoyed the experience. To many of them, it was a first. For instance, Hiba was born in the camp. This is the only life she had ever known. She never got to experience a proper childhood and she was so happy to play pretend,” the artist shared.
Saint Hoax added that due to war and displacement, the education of most refugee girls have been disrupted.
“This often leads to sexual and gender-based violence, increased risks of exploitation, and early marriage/pregnancy. It’s highly important to educate and empower girls in refugee camps,” Saint Hoax stated.
