- Former United States First Lady passes away at 94
- She succumbs to congestive heart failure, will be buried next to her husband
- Foundation asks for donations in lieu of flowers
MANILA, Philippines – Nancy Reagan, the wife of the late US President Ronald Reagan, has died.
According to Reagan’s spokeswoman Joan Drake, the former US First Lady succumbed to congestive heart failure at the age of 94. She will be laid to rest next to her husband.
“Mrs. Reagan will be buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, next to her husband, Ronald Wilson Reagan, who died on June 5, 2004,” her statement on the Reagan Foundation website read. “”Prior to the funeral service, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects at the Library.”
Drake also bared Reagan’s wish for donations for the Reagan Foundation instead of flowers.
“In lieu of flowers, we hope you will remember Mrs. Reagan with a memorial gift to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The Reagan Foundation was created by President and Mrs. Reagan to preserve the Reagan Legacy and continue President Reagan’s work for the benefit of future generations,”she said.
A budding actress, Nancy Davis met her husband in 1942 when he was already a well-known star in Hollywood. They married three years later.
Known to be glamorous in the style of Jacqueline Kennedy, Reagan was also known for her projects when she became First Lady — with the most famous being her “Just Say No” drugs awareness campaign.
Following an attempt on her husband’s life in 1981, Reagan assumed the role of protector and even controversially consulted an astrologer to set up his schedule.
Nevertheless, Reagan maintained her popularity and was even more lauded for being her husband’s dedicated caregiver after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1993 up until his death in 2004
