The hit musical Wicked that popularized the song Defying Gravity is officially scheduled for an encore run in Manila in 2017.
The official announcement made by production company Concertus Manila in its official Facebook page goes:
“WICKED, the Broadway and West End musical phenomenon, acclaimed as “one of the greatest musicals of our time” (Daily Mail, UK) is set to cast its magical spell over Manila audiences when it returns in early 2017.”
A poster of the musical indicates that the scheduled return would fall on February 2.
The musical, which made waves in New York’s Broadway and in London’s West End, made its first run in the Philippine capital between February to March of 2014, wherein a total of 42 shows were staged.
The play, directed by Joe Mantello and staged by Wayne Cilento, is an adaptation of a novel written by Gregory Maguire titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn is an adaptation of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Its official summary as earlier published by the Philippine Star reads:
“Once upon a time in the Land of Oz, two girls — one fiery, misunderstood and born with emerald-green skin, the other beautiful, ambitious and popular — cross paths and form an unlikely bond as they journey to become Elphaba a.k.a. Wicked Witch of West and Glinda the Good.”
Since it made its very first premiers in 2003 in San Francisco, the musical has already won 50 awards, including several Tony Awards and a Grammy.
Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and Concertus Manila are the official co-presenters of the upcoming Manila run. The wait list for ticket reservations can already be made via Ticket World.
