- He says Martial Law is something that people should not let happen again
Filipino actor John Arcilla, famous for his role as Antonio Luna in the historical epic film “Heneral Luna”, talked about what life was like for him and his family during the Martial Law years.
The revelation came after Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., a candidate for vice president, said that the assessment of the Martial Law years should be left to historians.
According to an article published by GMA News, Arcilla in a Facebook post on Wednesday, revealed that he and his family had to leave for Baler, Aurora weeks after the declaration of Martial Law by the late President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. because of restiveness in Metro Manila.
The actor revealed that there were numerous extra-judicial killings in Pasig where they lived and these killings were not reported by the media during the dark days of Martial Law.
“I remember when I was young, there will be some unidentified dead bodies found around the vicinity of our neighborhood in Baranca Pasig every now and then. But these will not be reported on newspapers, radios or TV – it is prohibited to broadcast such negative news – no one will risk,” Arcilla wrote.
Arcilla also explained to young people that the horror that ordinary people experienced during those years was genuine, however they were “unimaginable and unfathomable.” He also told them that Martial Law is something that people should not let happen again.
“I must tell YOU right now, at this very moment, that I can still feel that paranoia while I’m writing this,” he said.
As of the posting of this article, the subject Facebook post could no longer be seen on Arcilla’s account.
Instead, a meme picture with the message “I stopped explaining myself when I realized people only understand from their level of perception” was posted by the actor on Thursday.
“It is sad that there are people who will believe in what they believed in no matter what you say. But NO ONE can stop me from praying for their enlightenment. God Bless our Land,” he added.
