MANILA, Philippines – A four-year-old girl was decapitated in broad daylight and infront of her mother in an apparently random attack at a metro station in Taiwan on Monday, March 28.
Local media reports said the girl was with her mother and grandfather at Xihu Metro Station in Taipei when the suspect grabbed her from behind and stabbed her several times in the neck to the point of severing the victim’s head.
The girl was reportedly playing with her mini scooter that got stuck in a pot hole when the assailant started attacking her without any provocation.
“When it happened, I was just 1 meter away from her. I saw the man come up to my daughter and thought he was helping her, but when I approached them I saw the man hacking at my daughter’s neck,” Shanghaiist quoted the mother as telling reporters.
The mother and the grandfather both desperately tried to stop the 33-year-old suspect surnamed Wang but apparently failed.
“The first thing I did was grab hold of the man, but I wasn’t able to stop him, all I could do was hold him and stop him from escaping, while calling for help,” the distraught mother said.
People rushed in to help and pin the man to the ground until the authorities arrived to arrest him.
Authorities believed the man purchased the cleaver from a shop near the metro station before he was seen wandering around the premises.
He is reported to be suffering from mental illness and has records of drug abuse, local media said.
An angry mob gathered around the police station where the suspect was detained hours later brandishing baseball bats; apparently in an attempt to get back at the suspect. However, the crowd was prevented from coming close to the suspect.
Police are still investigating the gruesome incident, which is rarely heard in the Taiwanese capital.
