- Former American VP Al Gore visits Tacloban City and areas hit by typhoon Yolanda
- This is part of a new documentary he is producing about climate change
- Gore is also set to talk about the climate crisis during a leadership training in Manila
Former United States Vice President and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore visited Tacloban City to see for himself the destruction caused by super-typhoon Yolanda, as well as the efforts to rebuild communities in its aftermath.
Gore, who has since become a vocal environmental advocate known for his documentary called An Inconvenient Truth which tackled the issue of global warming, had a firsthand look at the city known as the “ground zero” of the storm that hit the country on November 2013, as part of his new documentary about climate change.
The former American Vice President went to the Holy Cross Memorial Cemetery to pay his respects to the more than 2,000 casualties buried there.
He also had a chance to meet with residents of Sitio Baybay in Barangay 88 to talk to families displaced by the typhoon.
“Natigdaan ako. Nalipay guihapon nga usa nga dako nga pagkatawo tikang ha iba nga bansa bumisita ha amon. Nagpapasalamat kami. Bisan kun duha na katuig an naglabay tikang han Yolanda, waray la guihap hiya kangalimot. [I was surprised. I am happy that a big personality from another country visited us. We are thankful. Even if two years have passed since Yolanda struck, he has not yet forgotten us],” barangay captain Emie Montalban told Rappler.
Gore also checked out the shipwrecked MV Eva Jocelyn which has now become a memorial for the victims of the typhoon.
During his visit to the city, the former Nobel Peace laureate was accompanied by fellow environmental advocate Senator Loren Legarda, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, and Councilor Cristina Romualdez.
After his trip to Tacloban, Gore headed back to Manila where he was set to give a presentation on the reality of the climate crisis at the 31st Climate Reality Leadership Corps training organized by The Climate Reality Project.
