- Duterte called out Roxas on his stint as DILG secretary during presidential debate
- He said Roxas is a pretentious leader, always claiming credit for work he did not do
- He blasted Roxas, says administration did nothing to curb illegal drug trade
MANILA, Philippines – While they may have traded pleasantries before the event, Rodrigo Duterte and Mar Roxas pulled no punches during the second edition of the presidential debate which was more undoubtedly heated than the first one.
Responding to the former interior secretary’s assertion that the current administration had done a lot to curb the illegal drug trade, the Davao City mayor said Roxas failed to follow-up the conviction of drug personalities and even allowed them to continue their trade unabated.
“Yes ang inaresto mo, pero ang ginawa ninyo? This administration allowed shabu to be cooked inside the national penitentiary. Is that your performance? Ikaw yung chief of police, pinaka-chief [You are the highest chief of the police]. The DILG is under you. The Philippine National (Police also). Wala kang ginawa [You did nothing]. And you are claiming credit which is not yours. Ang mahirap sa iyo [The hard thing about you] Mar (is) you are always a pretentious leader,” he told Roxas during the debate.
Later on, Duterte also brought up the issue of Roxas’ graduation from the prestigious Wharton School of Economics.
“You’re a fraud, you’re pretentious. Even your education, you included Wharton when you are not from Wharton,” he told Roxas.
Duterte’s remark was triggered by Roxas’ earlier claim he was vital to the confiscation of P7.5 billion worth of illegal drugs during his stint as Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary. In the same vein, Roxas also twitted Duterte for not acting on the several dozen villages in Davao City supposedly infested with illegal drugs which he informed the latter via a letter.
