- Cardinal Tagle says true love involves service

- Cardinal Tagle urges us to show our love to God through service
“Love and service. Love that serves. Love until the end. And serve by loving until the end. That’s how to walk with Jesus.”
This statement was a part of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle’s homily on Holy Thursday, March 24.
He said that Jesus Christ gave the world a clear example that the meaning of true love is service through his humble gesture of washing the feet of His disciples prior to the Last Supper (John 13: 1-17).
CBCP News quoted him as saying to the people who attended the mass at the Manila Cathedral: “The washing of the feet is the work of a slave. Even Christ’s death is part of His service to us. He died for us to live.”
He urged the people to reflect on the true nature and meaning of love and issued a challenge to show our love to God through service.
Cardinal Tagle also said that our achievements don’t matter in the end because genuine love comes from God and it is expressed through His mercy, and not through things that can easily vanish.
He said: “If you want to be with Jesus the only question is did you love until the end?
According to an article published by Rappler, Cardinal Tagle emphasized that this in Jubilee of Mercy, love is very concrete.
He quoted: “Noong ako’y nagugutom, pinakain mo ako. Noong akoy nauuhaw, pinainom mo ako. Noong ako’y walang saplot, dinamitan mo ako. Noong ako’y may karamdaman, dinalaw mo ako. Noong ako’y walang masisilungan, pinatuloy mo ako.’”
[When I was hungry, you fed me. When I was thirsty, you let me drink. When I was naked, you clothed me. When I was ill, you visited me. When I had no shelter, you let me in.]
