- Senator downplays youth group’s call for him to return his family’s alleged ill-gotten wealth
- He says Filipinos are more concerned with today’s problems
- He is not surprised by the call since it’s election period, will continue to focus on modern issues
MANILA, Philippines – Days after a youth group called on him to return the billions of pesos his father and family allegedly pilfered, vice presidential candidate Sen. Bongbong Marcos said the Filipinos of today are more concerned with the current problems hounding the country.
“Those are not the issues of our countrymen. Their issues are the fast rising cost of utilities, lack of infrastructures, lack of schools, hospitals, massive traffic, lack of airports, issues on agriculture and illegal drugs. Those are their issues,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
According to the son and namesake of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, he has been expecting issues of the past to be brought up given that it’s now the campaign period.
“These are issues that we have been hearing. I’m not surprised. Like what I’ve said, all candidates have critics and admirers,” he said.
While he will continue to respect his critics’ right to freedom of speech, Marcos said he hopes they will also allow him the chance to address the country’s current problems.
“If that’s what they want, let them be but at the same time they should allow me to talk about what the people are asking for,” he said.
Earlier, the group iBalikangBilyones ng Mamamayan (iBBM) Movement, which is composed of students and millennials, called on the senator to return the money which they said rightfully belongs to the Filipino people.
“It is incredibly sad that some of our fellow youth have fallen victim to historical white-washing,” group spokesperson Bea Reyno said. “The Marcoses stole hundreds of billions of pesos from the Filipino people. They instituted and systematized the corruption that we are still suffering from today.”
