• Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron was wounded in a clash with army troops in Sulu
• The ASG suffered 7 dead and six wounded during the clash
• Sahiron is included in the U.S. list of persons wanted for terrorism
The leader of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was wounded in an encounter with government forces in Sulu on Friday, March 18.
Radullan Sahiron was believed to be among the more than 20 persons wounded during the clash that started around 9:15 a.m. in Sitio Maggi, Barangay Panglayahan, Patikul, Sulu.
Joint Task Group Sulu Commander Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado said the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion led by Lt. Col. Mario Jacinto was conducting operation in the area when they encountered around 100 ASG fighters under the one-armed Radullan Sahiron.
Elena L. Aben wrote in her article published by Wiki Sabah on March 18, 2016 the bloody clash that lasted until 10:40 a.m. left 7 rebels dead and six wounded, while the government side suffered one soldier dead and 17 others wounded.
At around 2:00 p.m., the Tactical Operations Squadron Jolo immediately provided two Huey helicopters to evacuate the military casualties. Reinforcement was also provided for the engaged army troops.
Arrojado identified three of the wounded rebels as Radullan Sahiron, Asari Sajail and Almujer Yada.
“There’s an intelligence report that Radullan Sahiron was wounded in the firefight. We don’t know where he was hit but one of his assistants was shot in the leg,” Arrojado said.
Sahiron is included in the United States’ list of persons wanted for terrorism. The U.S. government, under its Rewards for Justice Program, put up a $ 1-million bounty for information leading to his arrest. The rebel leader was said to have played a role in the kidnapping of three American citizens – Guillermo Sobero, Martin and Gracia Burnham – from a resort in Palawan in May 2001.
