- The photos earn praises from the mayor’s supporters
- Many Duterte supporters from around the globe have mobilized to help in the mayor’s campaign
MANILA, Philippines – Two kids were spotted giving out wristbands bearing the name of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal III in what could be another kind of voluntary effort from the mayor’s supporters.
Photos of the two young boys, who could be no more than five years old, were shared on the Facebook page of Davao Breaking News. The pictures were shot by one Ali Go de Leon.
The post did not identify the two boys in the photos, but commenters praised them for doing their small part in helping Duterte’s campaign.
“Because they know from their parents.. They have a brighter future if duterte become the president…… kudos to the parents of this cuteee boys,” one netizen wrote.
“Because they cannot vote yet and their future lies in the hands of the adults. Vote with your hearts. Think about your children’s lives,” added another.
The Duterte camp admitted that lack of campaign funds is one of the major obstacles to the tough-talking mayor’s Malacañang bid. But supporters from around the world have reached out to Mayor Duterte to volunteer for his campaign.
Even before the official campaign period started this month, hundreds of thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from different countries have mobilized and joined various groups dedicated to monitoring campaign activities for Duterte.
According to Rappler, several pages have sprouted like mushrooms on Facebook to assist Duterte’s campaign thrust on social media.
These include the Rody Duterte Supporters OFW Global Movement with more than 280,000 members; Rody Duterte for President Movement International with more than 450,000 members; OFW4DU30 Global Movement with more than 14,000 members; and the DDS [Digong Duterte Supporters] Global, also with more than 14,000 members.
If these OFW numbers were to be translated into votes, not to mention the family members they could influence with their choice, Duterte would have a clean 1-million edge – which is still a conservative estimate – but enough for a candidate to win in a Philippine presidential election.
