VANCOUVER ISLAND, Canada – A family from Canada was horrified to find a shoe with a severed human foot inside while walking along a beach.
Rhian Lubin said in her article for The Mirror published on February 12 that there have been a total of 16 shoes with rotting foot remains found washed up on the shores of Canada in recent years and authorities still have no clear answers as to where they came from.
Charlotte Stephens and her family were visiting the coast of Vancouver Island when they stumbled on a shoe with a dismembered foot inside.
“[My husband] picked it up and brought it out onto the beach and we had a look at it for about five minutes and we thought, it almost looks like there is an actual foot bone in it,” said Stephens as she was quoted in an article by CBC News published on February 12.
After the family reported the incident, the British Columbia Coroners Service made an investigation and confirmed that the remains found were of a human and investigators are now trying to identify them.
An article by Jen Mills for Metro published on February 12 said that Coroner Matt Brown assured they are working with the police to determine who may have gone missing from the area since March 2013 and December 2015.
Brown also added that it’s difficult to pinpoint when the shoe entered the waters because of ocean currents.
“That’s why we’re working with our police counterparts and through our own information to determine who may be missing in the area to perhaps use that as a starting point,” Brown said.
Foul play has not been ruled out yet; however, the authorities said the most likely explanation is suicide.
