- Manny Piñol says Roxas ‘hangs himself’ over Davao City drug claims
- The staunch Duterte supporter believes Roxas’ remark could spell doom to his Malacañang bid
- Piñol also raises the possibility that Roxas may find himself in a legal bind over such ‘mindless statement’
MANILA, Philippines – It was a ‘mindless statement’ aimed at putting his rival in a bad light, but end up backfiring at former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas who now has to contend with a backlash of criticisms, and quite possibly, legal impediment.
This was according to former North Cotabato governor Manny Piñol, a close friend and a staunch supporter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Piñol was referring to Roxas’ remarks after the recenty-held “Pilipinas Debate 2016” in Cagayan De Oro City last Sunday insinuating that drug trade proliferates in Davao; supposedly contrary to Duterte’s claim.
“May droga sa Davao ngayon. Ngayon lang, gusto mo samahan kita e, makakabili tayo ng droga sa Davao e,” Roxas was quoted as telling reporters. [There is drug (trade) inn Davao today. If you want I can accompany you today, we can purchase some drugs in Davao.]
In that same interview, Roxas further claimed he knew where to buy cocaine in Makati City, apparently taking a potshot at another rival – Vice President Jejomar Binay.
In a Facebook commentary, Piñol said it was a statement that could spell doom to Roxas ambition to become president. Worse, the Liberal Party (LP) bet may also find himself in a legal bind for his supposed failure to report to authorties his knowledge of existing drug trade in two cites.
“I don’t believe Mar Roxas understood the implications of his statement,” Piñol quoted a retired police officer as saying. The former police official added Roxas could have done something about these drug problems even if he has already resigned as Interior secretary.
“Even now that he has resigned as DILG Secretary to run for President, Mar Roxas remains as one of President Aquino’s most trusted men. Why did he not submit to the President his findings on the drugs operations in Davao City and Makati City?” the retired colonel said.
Piñol also took another observation from a lawyer who said Roxas has “virtually hanged himself” by making the ‘preposterous claim’ about knowing where to buy drugs in Davao and Makati.
“He has virtually hanged himself and he made himself look foolish,” the lawyer said.
Earlier, while not completely disputing Roxas claims’, Duterte criticized Roxas for trying to blame others for his own inefficiency in solving drug crimes in the country while still serving as chief of DILG.
