Macau police arrested a Filipina domestic helper for allegedly dumping her newborn baby in a waste bin in an apartment building in Taipa.
According to a February 19 article in Macau News, the suspect is a 23-year-old Filipina; identified only as Literato.
She arrived in Macau last February 4; together with employer, her employer’s mother and her employer’s two children. Reports say that they stayed at a flat rented by her employer’s friend.
A Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson disclosed during a special press briefing on February 18 that the newborn, a baby girl, was discovered in a bin in a communal utility room on the 17th floor of Lei Yip Building in Flower City in Taipa by a cleaner at around 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 16.
Literato initially denied that she’s the mother, but the police conducted a DNA test which confirmed that the suspect is indeed the newborn’s mother.
She later admitted that she gave birth to the baby early Tuesday morning in the flat’s bathroom. However, she said her newborn baby girl didn’t cry so she thought she was dead.
She wrapped the girl in a towel and left it inside the waste bin.
Literato is unmarried and has a 5-year-old son living in the Philippines.
She had been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office. She may be charged with child abandonment and if proven guilty, she may be imprisoned for five years.
As for the newborn, she was rushed to a hospital and her condition has reportedly improved. She will be put under the care of the Social Welfare Bureau.
Literato was made aware that her baby is alive and in a better condition, but she did not mention if she wanted her baby back.
