- Superstar Nora Aunor slams Pacquiao over derogatory remark against same-sex couple
- The veteran actress says Pacquaio should have kept his opinion to himself
- She also chides the Filipino champion for his past ‘womanizing’ ways
MANILA, Philippines – Superstar Nora Aunor has weighed in to the raging controversy over Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao’s homophobic slur that caused a firestorm on social media; especially among the LGBT community.
The veteran actress chided the Filipino boxing champion for being ‘righteous’ when he himself has strayed from that path sometime ago; saying that being a ‘womanizer’ and a ‘gambler’ is far worse than being gay.
“Ang masama doon ay sugarol ka, babaero ka — mas masama iyon, ‘di ba? At saka huwag niyang sasabihing hayop kasi mga tao iyon eh,” the local showbiz superstar told reporters during a press conference for the Ani ng Dangal awards on Thursday, February 18.
[What’s not good about it is you are a gambler, a womanizer – that’s worse, isn’t it? And you should not call them animals, they’re humans.]
Pacquiao had his own share of controversies in the past after being allegedly involved with other women and for fathering a child out of marriage. He was also rumored to have lost a sizeable amount of money after being hooked on casinos.
The 62-year-old seasoned performer added that Pacquiao should have kept his opinion to himself; especially that he is running for the Senate in the coming May election.
The least Pacquiao can do, according to Aunor, is to shut his mouth and apologize to those he may have hurt.
“Nasa gobyerno siya, hindi ba? Kung ano ang personal na opinyon niya dapat itago na lang niya. Tumigil na muna siya nang kadadaldal at humingi siya ng tawad doon sa mga pinaringgan niya,” Aunor said.
[He’s in government, isn’t he? Whatever his personal opinion is, he should have kept it to himself. He should stop talking and ask forgiveness from the people he ‘hit’ with his words.]
Expressing her support for the legalization of same-sex marriage in the country, Aunor said people should start respecting members of the LGBT community.
“Tao pa rin ‘yan. Suportahan natin sila kasi wala naman silang ginagawang masama eh,” she added. [Still, they’re humans. Let us support them since they are not causing us any harm.]
Pacquaio has since apologized to the LGBT members and to everyone he has offended by his hurtful comparison, but stressed he stands by his words because that’s his personal belief.
