A Filipino-American is the head of the story team of Disney’s upcoming movie “Zootopia.”
In an article written by Aya Tantiangco of GMA News, Fil-Am Josie Trinidad oversees the translation of the script to its visual form. The script, on the other hand, was written by Jared Bush and Phil Johnson, based on a story by Bush, Rich Moore, and the film’s director Bryan Howard.
According to Trinidad, the movie story is “near and dear” to her heart as she can relate to the lead character, Judy Hopps; a rabbit who moved to a big city and finds herself wondering if she made a terrible decision.
“This is the exact same thing I went through when I moved to New York,” she shared.
Good thing, her life turned well. Trinidad joined Disney Animation Studios in 2004 as story apprentice. She was part of “The Princess And The Frog” (2009), “Tangled” (2010), “Wreck-It Ralph,” and shorts “How To Hook Up Your Home Theater” and “The Ballad Of Nessie.”
What inspired her to pursue animation is “Robin Hood”; while she was watching the movie when she was only eight years old.
“We accidentally paused the movie and it continued to play in slow motion. I saw each frame change and move. It was stunning how beautiful each drawing was. I realized someone actually had to draw each frame of animation, and I knew I wanted to do that,” she narrated.
The Filipino-American animator is an alumna of the University of California, Los Angeles and the California Institute of the Arts.
To be a successful storyboard artist, she believes, one should be able to express emotions through your images and produce convincing and realistic illustrations.
