MANILA, Philippines – He’s still a happy camper.
Despite arousing the ire of the LGBT community and their supporters over his controversial remarks, beleaguered Manny Pacquiao said his outlook remains as optimistic as ever because of his faith in God.
“I’m happy. I’m always happy because God is with me,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer during an after-training session interview in General Santos City on Friday, February 19.
Despite acknowledging his mistake in comparing same-sex marriage as worse than the behavior of animals, Pacquiao maintains he would still remain firmly opposed to it and said he was just telling the truth.
“What I am saying is right. I mean I am just stating the truth,” he said. “What I did wrong was just comparing the people to animals, but you know what I am telling is the truth. I am just telling what the Bible says. If we believe God, then we should honor the Word of God.”
Pacquiao added that the hullabaloo over his statements has not disturbed his focus on training and preparation for his third fight with American Timothy Bradley.
The bout, scheduled for April, will be Pacquiao’s final fight before retiring and venturing full-time into politics.
In his earlier interview with Radyo dzMM, Pacquiao stated he won’t retract his position on same-sex marriage just for the sake of getting votes from the LGBT community.
“I won’t compromise and okay a wrong just for the sake of getting votes,” he said.
