MANILA – Presidential candidate Grace Poe’s allies in the Left expressed their objection over her idea of making President Benigno Aquino III an anti-corruption adviser should she win in the May 2016 national election.
According to an article published by InterAksyon, the progressive multi-sectoral alliance Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), through a statement, urged Poe “to distance her campaign from the Aquino administration.” They pointed out that the Pres. Aquino is unfit to be an anti-corruption adviser.
In a story written by Xianne Arcangel of GMA News, Poe revealed the idea during her visit in Roxas City, Capiz; the bailiwick of the administration presidential bet Manuel Roxas II on Wednesday. She said she sees Aquino as part of an advisory council of former presidents in a manner similar to what former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo did by including past presidents in the National Security Council in 2001.
BAYAN, however, asserted that Pres. Aquino is not suited for a position who dispense advice on fighting graft and corruption and that “making Aquino her anti-corruption adviser won’t do her administration much good.”
BAYAN Secretary-General Renato Reyes, on his personal blog Like a Rolling Stone, proceeded to enumerate the reasons against Pres. Aquino as anti-corruption adviser:
“1. Aquino and Abad masterminded DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program).
2. Aquino only pretended to abolish PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Fund)
3. Aquino violated the Ombudsman’s suspension order when he made Purisima in charge of Mamasapano operation
4. Aquino, to this day, refuses to fire DOTC Sec. Abaya
5. For crying out loud, the Aquino administration is using public funds to campaign for Mar Roxas! How is that NOT corrupt?”
Reyes also asked the presidential hopeful to make her path independent of Pres. Aquino’s regime who has officials who should be held accountable for their misdeeds.
“Distancing herself from Aquino is necessary, not just because of the voters and the upcoming elections, but because it is the principled thing to do,” he said.
