- An official of the CBCP welcomed the appointment of VP Leni Robredo as HUDCC chair
- Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive director of Caritas Philippines, says “that strength of hers” is what PH needs
- He also welcomed the appointments made to DAR and DENR
An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) lauded the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to appoint Vice President Leni Robredo as the new head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
Fr. Edwin Gariguez, currently the executive director of Caritas Philippines and executive secretary of the National Secretariat for Social Action of the CBCP, said that Robredo’s background in serving the poor makes her fit to become the President’s housing czar.
“This is thinking about what is good for the whole country and how she can be of service to the country. She has experience in working with the poor and civil society organizations. So that strength of hers is what we need,” Gariguez told the Inquirer.
With Robredo at the helm of the country’s housing programs for the poor, Gariguez expects the agency to become more “consultative pro-people.”
“We are happy about the appointment. This not about partisanship but this is thinking about what is good for the whole country. Leni is not a traditional politician so we expect a better performance and a more consultative pro-people implementation of development for the poor,” he told CBCP News.
The head of the social action arm of the CBCP also welcomed the appointment of Rafael Mariano as the new Secretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and Gina Lopez as Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
“These are good choice for the people because they really fit for the job and not just to protect and pursue the interest of corporations of the ruling elite,” Gariguez added.
