MANILA, Philippines – He not only forgave, but he also gave.
Now, Sayd Omar Morales Akmad—a resident of General Santos City—is receiving praises from the online community for the kind way he treated a poor man who crashed into his vehicle with a motorcycle.
On his Facebook page, Akmad narrated how the man—who was carrying rice on his motorcycle—rear-ended his car while they were in the middle of the road.
In the process, the man also spilled the rice he was carrying.
According to Akmad, he took pity on the man as he was being interviewed by the police. He said he knew somehow that the man was poor and that his family must be waiting for him with the rice.
“Walang ano ano’y sinabihan ko ang pulis na hayaan nalang kasi siguro ay alam na nang taong ‘yan na nagkamali sya..siguro nmn sa susunod ay mag iingat na sya…halos tumulo ang luha nya sa ginawa ko… kahit di nya sinabi sa akin ay alam kong hirap ang buhay nila,” he said.
[Without any fuss I told the police to let him go because now maybe he knows he’s wrong and he will be careful next time. His tears almost fell with what I did. Even if he did not say it, I knew he and his family had a hard life.]
A short while later, Akmad gave the man money to buy rice—and this time the man cried tears of joy.
“Nang umupo kami sa upuan ay inabutan ko sya nang pambili ng bigas kapalit nang natapong bigas nya…‘di nya napigilan sarili nya at naluha sya…sabi nya ang swerte nya dahil ako nabangga nya pero mas ma swerte daw sya dahil may bigas padin silang isasaing kapalit nang natapon nya bigas kasi problema nya kung san sya kukuha nang pambili,” he said.
[When we sat in a chair I gave him money to replace the rice he spilled. He couldn’t help but cry. He said he was lucky I was the one he crashed into but he felt more lucky because he now has money to replace the spilled rice for his family.]
Thanking his father and grandmother for raising him the right way, Akmad ended his inspiring post with an equally inspiring proverb.
“Ano mang bagay na mawala sayo ay maibabalik mo pa, pero ang respeto at pagmamahal sa kapwa ay hindi na,” he wrote.
[Whatever material thing you have lost can still be regained, but not the love and respect you have for others.]
