Duterte’s photo for the magazine was shot by Edwin Tuyay and comes with the headline, “The Punisher: Why Rodrigo Duterte is the Philippines’ new leader,” written by Charlie Campbell.
An article by Gino Sidocon for Manila Bulletin mentioned that Duterte can be seen with a great smile, which is a totally different view from his usual serious expression. The presumptive mayor was wearing a sports coat, also a new view from usual sports shirt or checked polo shirt.
The TIME magazine article that was written by correspondent Charlie Campbell will be available on the 23rd of May.
Other notable personalities that graced the cover of Time magazine include former president Corazon Aquino and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.
During the 90-day campaign period, Duterte repeatedly vowed to stop crime, illegal drugs and corruption in government within the first six months once he positioned as president, which might be the reason for “The Punisher” headline.
However, Duterte has been tagged for extrajudicial killings during his term as mayor for over 22 years, but he has denied these allegations, saying that police operations in his city were all legitimate.
Once officially proclaimed as the winning candidate, Duterte will be the 16th president of the Republic of the Philippines and the oldest commander-in-chief of the archipelago.
