- President-elect Rodrigo Duterte wants the old Manila Central Post Office building to be converted into something very useful and functional
- He said he wants the proposed Department of Overseas Workers be housed in the post office building
- He also gave a stern warning to illegal recruiters that victimize job applicants
Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, May 16, reiterated his campaign promise to put up a government agency that would exclusively cater to the needs of overseas Filipino workers.
As mentioned in an article published by ABS-CBN, during the televised press conference held in Davao City, the incoming president said he wants the old Manila Central Post Office building in Intramuros, Manila to house the headquarters of the proposed Department of Overseas Workers.
Duterte noted that few people nowadays send mail through the snail mail so he would convert the old Post Office building into something very functional and very useful to the Filipinos.
The Department of Overseas Workers, he said, would be a one-stop shop for all Filipinos who are currently or planning to work overseas.
He said the public applying for work overseas should be able to get all the clearances they need, including those required by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the police department and health services in just one place. He suggested the use of computer technology to make it possible.
He likewise vowed to crack down on illegal recruiters that victimize applicants for overseas works.
“Lahat ng illegal recruiters, hindi na kailangang may biktima pa [Illegal recruiters should no longer have victims]. I will order the arrest of all recruiters operating without the proper permit,” he said.
“I would know when I see one. I can smell a rat a mile away. Huli na kayo [you will be caught]. I will do what you do to others. ‘Yan ang warning ko [that’s my warning],” Duterte warned.
