CHHATTISGARH, India – A pregnant woman went into premature labor with the thought she’ll be giving birth to one baby; however, to everyone’s surprise, five babies were delivered naturally.
Flora Drury identified the mother in her article for Mail Online published on April 2 as 25-year-old Manita Singh, who claimed she had never undergone any ultrasound when she was admitted to hospital on Saturday.
Manita was just at her 26th-week pregnancy when the premature labor started. After just over half an hour, the mother gave birth to five healthy, but very tiny, girls.
Doctors are closely monitoring the quintuplets hoping that all of them will survive.
The mother was admitted to a hospital at Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh in eastern India, on Saturday morning. Medical records from the hospital said the five babies are all weighing 1.5 kilograms and were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital.
“I am extremely grateful to God for blessing us with not one but five children,” said 26-year-old father Mahesh Singh.
“We were heartbroken when we lost our first child, a son, immediately after birth two years ago. I believe God has compensated the loss. I only hope that they all survive and I can give them a wonderful life,” Mahesh added.
An article by Ross Logan for The Mirror published on April 2 said that both mother and the babies are in stable condition; however, the doctors are closely monitoring the infants as they believe their chances of survival are very slim.
“This is the first case in my career where I have delivered five babies through normal birth. We are very happy for the parents but the babies are under supervision as they all are premature,” said Dr. Tekam who led the team of doctors in the delivery.
“While they are healthy, we cannot say if they will survive. However, we are doing every bit to save them,” the doctor added.
It would sure be nice to have them all five girls survive.
