A video just released by Albuquerque police in New Mexico shows a police officer mistakenly shooting his colleague at least eight times; damaging most of his vital organs during an undercover operation that has gone horribly wrong.
The video footage was captured by the body camera worn by the officer who shot his undercover agent by mistake.
The video begins as Lt. Greg Brachle exits his vehicle and approaches a car with tinted window where Detective Jacob Grant and another undercover police officer were sitting with two suspects from whom they would buy drugs worth $ 60.
Two other police officers were seen walking up to the car on the passenger’s side.
Brachle can be heard yelling out “Put your hands where I can see them” two times.
When the rear door of the car opened, Brachle yelled “Gun! Gun!” and opened fire before ducking behind another car.
When Brachle reemerges, he realized his mistake and started shouting obscenities and cursing at himself.
“Holy (expletive)! It’s Jacob,” Lt. Brachle screamed as he realized what he has done.
“I didn’t know it was you. Hang in there, bro. I thought you were a bad guy,” the lieutenant howled.
Brachle asked the wounded undercover officer if he was okay. Grant replied: “No.”
The incident happened on January 2015 and the video was released by authorities only on Thursday, March 30, 2016; a day after the city government settled a lawsuit filed by Detective Jacob Grant for $ 6.5 million. The city will also cover Grant’s medical expenses for the rest of his life.
