- K-pop group 2NE1 will now be just a trio after one of its members decided to quit the band
- Gong Minzy will no longer be renewing her contract with YG Entertainment
- No replacements will be made and the group will continue as a trio act
The all-girl Korean pop group 2NE1 has officially become a trio after one of its members decided to leave.
Gong Minzy, the youngest member of the former quad act, will no longer renew her contract once it ends on May.
Meanwhile, the group’s management, YG Entertainment, said it will not be replacing Gong, thus making 2NE1 a three-girl act composed of team leader Chaelin Lee or more popularly known as CL, Sandara Park who was an actress in the Philippines before joining the group, and Park Bom.
“Last January, we had individual face-to-face talks with each member regarding renewing their contracts and showed our desire for the group to reform. Unfortunately, Gong Minzy did not feel the same. Having to say goodbye to a colleague who has been with us since she was a trainee for 11 years is really difficult. However, we fully understand and respect Gong Minzy’s position as the group had to suddenly halt promotions two years ago. Thus, it is true that we feel more sorry rather than feeling unsatisfied,” YG Entertainment said in a statement that was earlier published by Rappler.
Yang Hyun Suk, head of the talent management company, assured fans, however, that the group will not be disbanding despite this rather drastic change in arrangements.
“I want to protect 2NE1 until the end no matter what. When it gets difficult, let’s gather together and be strong and overcome this,” Yang said.
2NE1 has become one of the most successful K-pop groups since its debut in 2009. The group popularized the song I Don’t Care, which gave them their very first number one single.
