Caitlin Lucas, the 3-year-old girl who suffered from a rare affliction of leukemia finally breathed her last on Thursday, March 31, after battling with her blood cancer.
The young girl has been known to many as “Courageous Caitie,” after her story saw the online pages.
This little girl has since inspired the Filipinos for her brave fight against her blood cancer.
Lucas’ demise was made public after her parents posted a family picture in her Facebook page captioned “Today our daughter has gone to Jesus already.”
Caitie’s story became viral as it made the rounds online when her mother created a Facebook page where she tackled about the little girl’s mysterious affliction.
An article published by the Inquirer shared that due to the illness which was not known immediately, the Lucas family flew to Singapore in February to have Caitie treated.
Caitlin or Caitie was confined at the National University Hospital in Singapore where she was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), a rare cancer of the blood affecting infants and toddlers and affects only one in a million children in the US.
Earlier reports even indicated that there is no known cure for the illness.
The young Lucas was hospitalized on New Year’s Day after complaining of severe abdominal pain.
However, prior to her hospitalization, the previous months had her skin acquire marks like that of insect bites.
The marks later became lesions and she was further found to be suffering from serious symptoms such as enlarged spleen and liver.
Her Facebook page, maintained by her mother Christine Del Feliz Lucas, contains accounts of how Caitie fought her courageous battle against her sickness.
The posts won the hearts of people who offered gifts and prayed for Caitie who, amid her illness, still manifested a cheerful disposition.
Earlier on Thursday, her mother wrote on the FB page that Caitie has been having a difficult time breathing since the night before.
She said they have to intubate her and put her to sleep to avoid discomfort.
Again, she wrote “This is the last time I saw Caitie’s eyes [completely] open last night. Asking for prayers right now, today she will be sedated and put on a tube to stabilize her because of her high respiratory rate.”
After few minutes, she posted that the child was in critical condition and that her oxygen level is not going up as she wrote an accompanying post that read “Let your will be done.”
The last post of the Courageous Caitie FB page contained the photo of Caitie and her parents wearing smiles on their faces.
The post read: “Our last family pic with eyes open and smiling despite running after her [breath]. It is well. You were awesome my daughter,” the mother posted.
