- Officials say the eye surgeons apparently used instruments that were not sterilized
- The city government said there has been a contamination during the performance of the surgery due to the unsterilized instruments
SAO PAULO — Instead of being cured, 18 Brazilian nationals went blind instead, after they were treated of cataract as part of a cataract treatment campaign in a suburb in Sao Paolo, officials said on Thursday.
In an article published by the Manila Bulletin on April 1, it was indicated that the surgeons have allegedly used unsterilized instruments on the victims.
Officials at Sao Bernardo do Campo’s city hall disclosed that 27 people were operated on Jan. 30. where 22 of them acquired an eye infection called endophthalmitis while 18 became blind.
Expedito Batista, one of the patients, said there was no problem on the Saturday he was operated on. He added that his eyes were still fine on the following day of Sunday.
However, Batista said that when he woke up on Monday, everything was dark that he couldn’t see anymore.
The city government, in a statement sent through email, said results of an investigation showed that there has been a contamination during the surgery due to the unsterilized instruments.
It said that the contamination occurred due to flaws in the disinfection and sterilization of the surgical instruments that were used in the operation.
Jose Luis de Macedo, the lawyer for the ophthalmology institute contracted to perform the eye operations, in an interview with reporters, said he could not yet give a comment because he has not read the report of the investigation done by the Sao Bernardo’s Health Department.
