- The BOC will be auctioning abandoned and confiscated items worth P7 million on Monday
- The items will be available for public viewing in Laguna on Thursday and at the South Harbor on Friday
- The auction is done in line with the provisions of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced that it will be auctioning items worth P7 million that the agency has confiscated during its operations.
In an article written by Jessica Bartolome for GMA News Online on April 6, 2016, it was disclosed that the BOC will be displaying the items for public viewing at the Inland Clearance Depot of Asian Terminals Inc. in Laguna on Thursday and at the South Harbor on Friday.
According to the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines, abandoned items at port areas and seized items of the customs department are subject for sale through public bidding.
Among the items included in the auction are several industrial machinery, auto spare parts, motorcycle parts, used bicycles and motorcycle, assorted toys, aquarium accessories, assorted grocery items, and different houseware, kitchenware and ready-to-wear (RTW) clothing.
The items, that are currently valued at P7,015,223. 20, will be auctioned on Monday by the Port of Manila’s Auction and Cargo Disposal Division.
Last year, the BOC also auctioned smuggled rice worth P9.52 million.
The contrabands, which amount to 11,840 sacks of white and glutinous rice from Intercontinental Grains International Trading, Inc., Rainbow Holding, Inc., and Evergreen Cereal, were among the items seized by the BOC for being shipped without the necessary permits from the National Food Authority.
In 2014, the government has earned almost P320 million in selling confiscated items kept in 779 container vans. To date, the most income generating auction ever recorded by the Manila International Container Port (MICP) was held in the same year; with sales reaching up to P580 million — an amount that is almost 4.5 times above the projected target of only P130 million.
